Dismantling Racism: Understanding the Impact of Stereotype Threat in our Schools

On July 16 at 9 am CDT, Julian Condie, Associate Vice President of Innocent Technologies, will convene a conversation on how stereotype threat interferes with a child’s natural engagement with learning. When a student knows that there are stereotypes present about them, even implicitly, their behavior and way of being are informed by the presence of those stereotypes. If we are to reach and teach all our children, especially our children of color, we must center their experiences in our conversation and understand just how much of their reality is informed by stereotypes about them – stereotypes that actually have nothing to do with them. In order to eliminate this reality in our schools, we first need to face it.
